Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners Free Pick - 8/18/13

The Seattle Mariners look to knock off the division leading Texas Rangers on Sunday.
Every team takes one on the chin regardless of how good they are. The same can be said of the best pitchers in the game because they too will get smacked around every once in awhile and that’s about all we can say about Felix Hernandez and the Mariners in Saturday’s 15-3 rout at the hands of Texas. Hernandez suffered a rare off day with five runs allowed in five frames before the relief corps was ripped for ten runs in a complete thitem away contest. The offense had no shot in this one on ten hits and a walk that saw Kyle Seager homer and single in a run. The Mariners are scheduled to start Erasmo Ramirez versus the Rangers Sunday. Ramirez has truggled in five 2013 start but is 4-0 despite an ERA north of seven because his bats have been plating plenty of runs.
Even though the Rangers currently sit atop the American League West, they are still playing .500 baseball over the past few weeks. That has been good enough to hold off Oakland in this stretch but my gut tells me they’ll have to do better than that to stave off the Athletics going forward. It was probably a bit surprising at how easily the Rangers handled Hernandez, although not so much of a surprise that Martin Perez held the Mariners attack to three runs and eight hits through seven frames. The bats pounded out 14 hits and walked eight times with Craig Gentry leading the way with three RBI’s, while four others knocked in two runs apiece. The Rangers hand the ball to a red hot Yu Darvish to stop the Mariners. Darvish has posted quality starts in five consecutive appearances in which he has allowed just five runs over 34.1 innings.
I don’t like these huge spreads because there is no value in the run line with the Rangers. I guess if I played this it would be something small on the over…
