The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to lead the National League Central but the lead got a little smaller as they lost on Saturday. Andrew McCutchen had three hits and Pedro Alvarez and Starling Marte each hit home runs as the Pirates scored five runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Locke had a rough day on Saturday allowing 10 hits and eight runs while striking out two over 2.2 innings to take the loss and falling to 9-4 on the season. For Sunday’s game the Pirates start Charlie Morton who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Morton has allowed 67 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 46 over 61.2 innings for a 4-3 record and a 3.79 ERA.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are falling out of post-season contention but they kept their hopes alive on Saturday with a win at Pittsburgh. Martin Prado had four hits including a home run, Paul Goldschmidt had three hits including a home run, and Wil Nieves had three hits as the D-Backs scored 15 runs on 20 hits. Starting pitcher Tevor Cahill allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 4-10 on the season. For Sunday’s game Arizona starts Wade Miley who has won five of his last six decisions. For the season Miley has allowed 146 hits and 60 earned runs while striking out 109 over 148.2 innings for a 9-8 record and a 3.63 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 2-6 in their last eight games, 23-7 in their last 30 games as a favorite, and 7-3 in Morton’s last 10 starts. Arizona is 6-1 in their last seven games against a team with a winning record, 2-4 in their last six road games, and 1-6 in Morton’s last seven starts against a team with a winning record. Arizona is 4-8 in their last 12 games in Pittsburgh.
