2013-08-21 06:05:00 EDT
The Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Wednesday in Baltimore for game three of their series at Camden Yards.
The Baltimore Orioles had a chance at the start of this series to make a move up the standings but so far they have doe nothing but drop games after they lost on Tuesday to the Rays for the second time in consecutive days. On Tuesday Matt Wieters hit a home run and Adam Jones and Chris Davis each had hits as the Orioles scored four runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-6 on the season. For Wednesday’s game the Orioles start Wei-Yin Chen who has lost his last three starts, for the season Chen has allowed 85 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 60 over 94.2 innings for a 6-6 record and a 3.23 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays continue to chase the Boston Red Sox in the AL East but they have kept pace by winning in Baltimore again on Tuesday. Yunel Escobar had three hits and Ben Zobrist, Wil Myers, Jomes Loney, and Kelly Johnson had two hits each as the Rays scored seven runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher Alex Cobb allowed three hits and two runs while striking out five over 6.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 8-2 and Fernando Rodney earned his 29th save. For Wednesday’s game the Rays start Jeremy Hellickson who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Hellickson has allowed 152 hits and 80 earned runs while striking out 112 over 146.2 innings for a 10-6 record and a 4.91 ERA.
Baltimore is 21-11 in their last 32 games as a home favorite, 2-6 in their last eight games, and 1-4 in Chen’s last five starts.
Tampa Bay is 8-2 in their last 10 game three of a series, 2-5 in their last seven road games, and 5-11 in Hellickson’s last 16 road starts. Tampa Bay is 7-1 in the last eight meetings of these two.
Both of these pitchers have had their share of trouble recently and for my first free pick I am going to go with the over. My second free pick is on the winning side and I will give out that Free Pick on Wednesday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
