The New York Mets welcome the division leading Atlanta Braves to Citi Field on Tuesday.
I don't know what happened to the Braves over the past month or so, but it's all been good...really good. Atlanta is firmly in control of the National League East with wins in seven of ten after upending the Nationals 2-1 Sunday and likely capturing the division in the process unless they fall off the map. Julio Teheran made two first inning runs hold up with five hits and three walks allowed over six scoreless frames to pick up the win. The bats were quiet on five hits and four walks, but rode RBI singles off the bats of Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson to the win. Brandon Beachy will be on the mound for the series opener with the Mets. Beachy has been sharp the past three times out with five runs allowed on 14 hits and three walks over 20.1 innings.

The Mets won't be winning or even challenging for the National League East, but the New Yorkers could catch Washington for second in the division and possibly reach .500. Those goals might not matter in the grand scope of things, but if they are reached it could be a good sign that the team is on the right track for 2014. The Mets dominated Minnesota Monday by a 6-1 count with both the arms and bats on the same page. Dillon Gee gave up six hits and struck out nine through 7.2 shut out frames and the offense didn't waste the effort. The bats pounded out 14 hits and walked three times, with six different players driving in runs, while four scored. Rookie Zack Wheeler takes the ball Tuesday hoping to cool off the surging Braves. Wheeler appears to have figured things out with quality starts in four of his last five times out in which he was charged with seven runs in 25.1 frames.
The Mets are capable with Wheeler throwing well and would like nothing better than to knock off the division leaders. At the same time, Atlanta would like to keep on rolling and get Beachy in good shape heading in to the postseason...
