The Pittsburgh Pirates hope to use their bread-and-butter of pitching and defense to defeat the San Diego Padres again Tuesday.
Pittsburgh toppled SD 3-1 on Monday. The Pirates opened ahead 2-0 during the top of the fourth thanks to Pedro Alvarez's RBI-single. Alvarez's home run a few frames later put the Pirates ahead 3-0. Francisco Liriano (14-5, 2.53 ERA) was superlative striking out 13 Padres during seven innings.

Andrew Cashner (8-8, 3.74 ERA) wasn't bad for San Diego also going seven frames. Nick Hundley's late RBI-double nearly began a rally. The Padres though even with Hundley advancing to third base on a wild pitch could not get one more clutch hit as Mark Kotsay struck out to finish the deal.
A.J. Burnett (5-8, 3.18 ERA) goes out to the bump hoping to handle SD's offense. Burnett's last two road starts were nightmares conceding eight hits and earned runs during 4.1 and 5.1 innings at the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies. Burnett went down 6-4 at Colorado while Pittsburgh fell short 6-5 at St. L. Burnett is 2-5 overall in away voyages.
At Petco Park Aug. 21 the Padres scored just four times despite 12 hits and five walks off of Burnett during 6.1 frames. The Pirates still lost 7-5. Pittsburgh was blanked at PNC Park 10 days earlier last season by San Diego who scored all of their runs during 5.2 innings by Burnett. The Padres are 29-of-83 with 15 RBIs, seven Carlos Quentin's, against Burnett.
SD comes back with Tyson Ross (3-5, 2.62 ERA) who has been solid his last five outings. Ross has conceded a total of five runs during 34 frames. Unfortunately the New York Mets and New York Yankees beat the Padres 4-1 and 3-0 when Ross started despite bleeding for three runs during 13 innings.
Ross took one loss. San Diego is 3-9 in Ross' Petco showings. The Pirates' Russell Martin is 1-of-2 versus Ross. The only way thus far this season to beat Ross at Petco Park has been to shutout the Padres. Pittsburgh nearly did it Monday.
