The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins close out their series in Detroit on Thursday.
The Detroit Tigers have had their way with the American League Central this season and they showed that once again pounding the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Austin Jackson had three hits and Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez had two hits each as the Tigers scored seven runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez allowed six hits and a run while striking out eight over 6.2 innings to not get the decision as Drew Smyly got the win to go to 5-0 on the season and Jose Veras earned his 20th save. For Thursday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who seems to be finding his late season form. For the season Verlander has allowed 164 hits and 65 earned runs while striking out 160 over 166.2 innings for a 12-9 record and a 3.51 ERA.
The Minnesota Twins hung around for the bulk of the game against the Tigers on Wednesday but that was as long as they could hold on as they fell in Detroit. Justin Morneau and Wilkin Ramirez each had two hits and Brian Dozier had a hit as the Twins scored one run on six hits. Starting pitcher Kevin Correia allowed nine hits and four runs, two earned over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-10 on the year. For Thursday ‘s game the Twins start Andrew Albers who took his first Major League loss in his last start. For the season Albers has allowed 14 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven over 24.1 innings for a 2-1 record and a 1.85 ERA.
Detroit is 21-6 in their last 27 games as a favorite, 16-6 in their last 22 games against the AL Central, and 60-20 in Verlander’s last 80 starts. Minnesota is 4-2 in their last six games as a road underdog, 2-6 in their last eight games against the AL Central, and 18-41 against a team with a winning record. Detroit is 11-1 in Verlander’s last 12 starts against Minnesota.
