Chicago Cubs vs. Washington Nationals Free Pick - 8/22/13
2013-08-22 01:20:00 EDT
The Washington Nationals seek their third victory in four tries this week on Thursday at the Chicago Cubs. Washington downed Chicago 11-6 Wednesday despite being outhit 14-11.
Three thee-run Nats innings were too much for the Cubs to overcome. Washington scored in bunched with Jayson Werth and Scott Hairston home runs serving up three RBIs apiece.
Chicago scored first with an Anthony Rizzo HR. Rizzo homered later to spark a five-run Cubs fifth frame. Donnie Murphy, Cole Gillespie and Welington Castillo drove in runs. Too bad the Nationals also knocked in runs via Kurt Suzuki’s single, Ross Ohlendorf’s (2-0, 2.58 ERA) sacrifice, Denard Span’s triple and Ryan Zimmerman’s single.
Travis Wood (7-10, 3.13 ERA) deals next for Chicago hoping to stop a three-game skid. Wood’s three losses in August all came at Wrigley Field. The Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals stormed in 11 runs during 16.2 innings. Wood was 4-4 at Wrigley before August beating the Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and St. L yielding five runs during 26.1 frames.

Washington is just 1-of-15 without an RBI versus Wood so the Nats will likely need Stephen Strasburg (6-9, 2.93 ERA) to be on top of his game. Strasburg’s last three road trips haven’t been good allowing 14 runs during 10 innings. The Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins beat Strasburg 5-1 and 8-3. In fact in Strasburg’s 11 away appearances Washington has scored less than four runs eight times.
Strasburg’s other road blemishes came at Cincinnati, the Cleveland Indians and New York Mets surrendering 11 runs, nine earned, during 16.1 frames. Strasburg’s one away victory of the season came May 16 at the San Diego Padres giving up two runs, one earned, during eight innings.
The Cubs five days earlier tagged Strasburg with an 8-2 loss. Chicago struck for four unearned runs during five frames against Strasburg who the Cubs are 6-of-29 with three RBIs versus. Rizzo has two RBIs and J.C. Boscan one RBI versus Strasburg who I expect to outpitch Wood helping the Nationals to a win.
