The Pittsburgh Pirates try to add to the San Francisco Giants' woes Thursday in SF.
Pittsburgh couldn't sweep the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, falling 2-1. The Pirates were outhit 11-4, but did manage a run during the eighth to pull within one. Andrew McCutchen's sacrifice fly got Felix Pie home. McCutchen had half of Pittsburgh's hits. The Pirates were 0-of-1 with Runners In Scoring Position.

The Giants were trounced 12-1 by the Boston Red Sox Wednesday afternoon. San Francisco was outhit 12-5 and made two errors, one by Michael Kickham (0-3, 10.72 ERA) and another from Marco Scutaro. Joaquin Arias homered during the second for the Giants' only run.
Matt Cain (8-8, 4.35 ERA) heads to the mound next for SF seeking his sixth start of at least seven innings pitched. Unfortunately, the Giants are 2-3 in those five outings, four times scoring two runs or fewer. Cain has given up no more than three runs. In fact, at AT&T Park, Cain has conceded one, two and three runs during seven frames apiece in his last three starts. San Francisco is 0-3 with Cain taking two August defeats.
Earlier in the year at AT&T Park, Cain fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinal,s seeing in 20 runs during 12 innings. Cain beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Colorado Rockies and LA yielding seven runs during 25.1 frames. At Pittsburgh, Cain won 10-0 with 6.2 phenomenal frames. The Pirates are 21-of-130 with eight RBIs, three Gaby Sanchez's, versus Cain.
Pittsburgh replies with Jeff Locke (9-4, 2.90 ERA), who has fallen in three of his last four decisions. The Pirates are 1-3 in Locke's last four starts and are 5-7 when he hurls on the road. Locke has let in six runs during 12.2 innings in losses at the Dodgers and Miami.
Locke's away victories have come over the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies and St. L, surrendering a run during 24 frames. The Giants' Andres Torres has all two at-bats versus Locke, singling his way on base once. SF needs to give Cain run support. Four runs might be enough to decide the winner here.
