The Los Angeles Angels visit Safeco Field to battle the Seattle Mariners in Friday action.
The Angels were supposed to at least be a factor in the American League West race put they have never been in it. Their play of late sums up the season with two wins over the last ten times out. Los Angeles had an outside shot at reaching the .500 mark but that time has come and gone with the team sitting at 13 games below the break even point with the year beginning to wind down. A 3-1 loss to visiting Cleveland didn't help matters Wednesday and squandered a strong effort from Jerome Williams who gave up two runs over 6.1 frames. The bats totaled seven hits and walked five times with Hank Conger doubling in their lone run. Garrett Richards is scheduled to open the series on the mound with the Mariners on Friday. Richards did not get a decision in a 6-5 victory over Houston where he was charged with five runs on 12 hits in six innings.

Even though the Mariners are not a factor in the American League West race, they are playing better than they have in quite some time. Seattle has been the very definition of spoiler after beating both Texas and Oakland twice in the past week or so. The M's polished off the Athletics 5-3 on Wednesday behind solid hitting and starter Hisashi Iwakuma who escaped jam after jam. Iwakuma allowed all three runs on seven hits and a pair of base on balls through seven innings to improve to 12-6. The offense made the most of seven hits and five walks with Brendan Ryan driving in three, while Michael Morse and Brad Miller cracked solo homers. Felix Hernandez looks to atone for a rare beat down when he squares off with the rival Angels. Hernandez fell to Texas 15-3 last time out with five runs plated on five hits and five walks over five frames.
I am favoring Seattle here even though Hernandez has sometimes struggled when facing the Angels. The King off a poor performance is always worth looking in to...
