The two starting pitchers from this year’s All Star Game face off on Saturday at the site of the All Star Game, Citi Field for game two of the series between the New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers.
The New York Mets fell behind early on Friday and never caught up as they dropped game one in their series with the Tigers. Wilmer Flores and Eric Young each had three hits and Marlon Byrd had two hits as the Mets scored one run on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed six hits and five runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to take the loss and go to 0-1 on the season after one start. For Saturday’s game the Mets start Matt Harvey who is looking for his 10th win of the year. For the season Harvey has allowed 122 hits and 43 earned runs while striking out 187 over 171.2 innings for a 9-4 record and a 2.25 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers were out hit on Friday but they made their hits count as they knocked off the Mets. Miguel Cabrera had two hits including his 41st home run, Torii Hunter had two hits including a home run, and Ausitn Jackson hit a home run as the Tigers scored six runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed eight hits and a run while striking out four over 6.1 innings to get the win and go to 11-6 on the season. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Max Scherzer who is looking to lock down the Cy Young Award in the AL. For the season Scherzer has allowed 117 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 185 over 172.1 innings for a 18-1 record and a 2.82 ERA.
New York is 4-0 in their last four games against a left-handed starter, 17-7 in their last 24 interleague games, and 1-4 in Harvey’s last four starts. Detroit is 6-0 in their last six interleague games, 23-9 in their last 32 games overall, and 6-1 in Scherzer’s last seven road starts. Detroit is 2-5 in their last seven games in New York.
While we have arguably the two best pitchers in baseball facing off this total is way too low and my free pick is on the over. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that strong pick in the Premium Area.
