2013-08-24 08:10:00 EDT
The Los Angeles Angels sank the Seattle Mariners 2-0 Friday and will try to do the same on Saturday for a 2-0 series lead.
LA won 2-0 due to a second-inning two-run Chris Nelson blast. The Angels had one fewer hit than Seattle. Felix Hernandez (12-7, 2.63 ERA) proved to be just a little worse than Garrett Richards (4-5, 3.95 ERA).
The M’s left five runners on base. Lead-off batter Brad Miller had two hits. Los Angeles stranded four base runners. Josh Hamilton had half of the Angels’ hits.
Jason Vargas (6-5, 3.92 ERA) starts next for LA who has fallen four of his last five appearances. Vargas though is just 1-2 since a 5-0 May. Vargas was 0-3 in April allowing 12 runs during 17 frames in defeats.
At Safeco Field April 28 Vargas went down 2-1 yielding two runs during eight innings. The Mariners were beaten 11-3 at Angels Stadium June 17 thanks to seven two-run frames by Vargas. Seattle is 15-of-74 with seven RBIs, four Kendrys Morales’, versus Vargas.
The M’s counter with Erasmo Ramirez (4-0, 5.94 ERA) in Game Two. Ramirez is 2-0 at Safeco dumping the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins giving up seven runs during 11.2 July innings. The Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers however won in Seattle 8-7 and 10-5 knocking in eight runs during 6.1 frames of two Ramirez no-decisions.
Los Angeles last year pulled in five runs, three earned, during six innings Sept. 25 to defeat Ramirez 5-4. The Angels are 6-of-17 with three RBIs against Ramirez. The Mariners seem to be in trouble for the second day in a item at Safeco Field.
