The Texas Rangers look to solidify their grip atop the West against the Seattle Mariners.
The Rangers missed a chance to pick up a game in the standings with a 5-2 loss to the White Sox with Oakland taking one on the chin in Baltimore. That was consecutive defeats and Texas certainly doesn't want this to become any bigger and give the Athletics a chance to take back the American League West lead. The division leaders have generally received decent pitching and hitting although neither was strong Sunday with Matt Garza allowing all five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over seven innings. The offense stalled despite an eleven hit, one walk attack that produced Jeff Baker's two run blast and nothing else. The Rangers send newly acquired Travis Blackley to the bump for his second straight start. Blackley did not receive a decision in a 4-2 victory over Houston with both runs plated on three hits and a BB in four frames.

Seattle doesn't have the big win total but in the scope of things this hasn't been a bad season up to this point. I say this comparing 2013 to previous seasons where the Mariners have usually been buried in the basement of the American League West. Having said that, the M's didn't make this statement look good following a three game sweep by the visiting Angels. A 7-1 defeat at the hands of Jered Weaver is hardly embarassing although starter Aaron Harang was hit hard with all seven runs plated on nine hits and and a pair of free passes and the bats obviously had trouble with only five hits and a single walk to their credit with Dustin Ackley cracking a solo homer. Left hander Joe Saunders looks to right the ship versus visiting Texas Monday. Saunders has really struggled the past six times on the mound with only one quality start while going 1-4 with a no decision.
This is an ugly match up on the mound so I automatically turn to the team most likely to hit. It doesn't always work out favorably which says no play because of the large juice on a poor hurler but edge to the Rangers...
