The San Diego Padres try to respond to a 6-1 beatdown Monday at the Arizona Diamondbacks when the two teams reconvene Tuesday.
SD scored first during the top of the first on Yonder Alonso's fielder's choice when shortstop Didi Gregorius's throwing error brought home Will Venable from third base. Paul Goldschmidt evened things during the fourth, though, with a home run. Martin Prado's sacrifice fly put Arizona ahead 2-1 after four innings.

Prado doubled the D-Backs' advantage during the sixth. Tony Campana and Goldschmidt fielder's choices finished up the scoring in Arizona. The Diamondbacks outhit the Padres 8-5 and each team committed an error.
Ian Kennedy (5-9, 4.88 ERA) is getting used to throwing for San Diego, picking up two wins in four ties with the Padres since being dealt from Arizona. Kennedy's only loss was a five-run, 4.2-frame affair Aug. 16 to the New York Mets.
Five days earlier, Kennedy was terrific, conceding two runs during eight innings at the Cincinnati Reds. SD fell 3-2. Kennedy was 2-3 at Chase Field, allowing five runs, four earned, during 12 frames in wins, and 17 runs, 16 earned, during 17.2 innings in defeats. The D-Backs are 7-of-35 with a Prado and Cody Ross RBI versus Kennedy.
Arizona retaliates with Trevor Cahill (5-10, 4.39 ERA), who hasn't gone at Chase since June 19 when he tossed one scoreless frame in a 3-1 Diamondbacks victory. Cahill is 1-4 at Chase Field, only tripping up the Colorado Rockies 3-2 with a five-inning one-run outing.
Cahill was crushed for 16 runs during 19.1 frames in his four home defeats, with the San Francisco Giants tallying half the runs during 3.2 innings June 8. In San Diego June 14, the Padres clipped Cahill 2-1 due to driving in two runs during 5.2 frames. Against Cahill, the Padres are 38-of-148 with 16 RBIs, a quarter belonging to Carlos Quentin.
