The Detroit Tigers and the Oakland A’s meet on Wednesday after a rain-shortened game on Tuesday.
The Detroit Tigers no longer have the best record in the American League after falling to the A’s on Tuesday. Torii Hunter, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez all had hits as the Tigers scored three runs on three hits. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed four hits and five runs, while striking out three over 5.0 innings to take the loss and go to 12-10 on the season. For Wednesday’s game, the Tigers start Doug Fister, who is coming off a win in his last start. For the season, Fister has allowed 178 hits and 66 earned runs, while striking out 125 over 167.2 innings for an 11-6 record and a 3.54 ERA.

The Oakland A’s control their own destiny as far as making the post season, but they are helping their own cause, as they also set their sights on regaining the lead in MLB’s AL West. On Tuesday, Brandon Moss and Seth Smith hit home runs and Jed Lowrie drove in two runs as the A’s scored six runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Tom Milone allowed the hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out three over 5.0 innings to get the win and go to 10-9 on the year. For Wednesday’s game, the A’s start Daniel Strally, who has lost his last five decisions. For the season, Strally has allowed 107 hits and 59 earned runs, while striking out 94 over 116.1 innings for a 6-7 record and a 4.56 ERA.
Detroit is 24-9 in their last 33 games as a favorite, 25-11 in their last 36 games overall, and 7-1 in Fister’s last eight starts. Oakland is 5-1 in their last six games against the AL Central, 4-10 in their last 14 games as an underdog, and 1-6 in Strally’s last seven starts.
Some pitchers just go through stretches where they can’t win no matter how well they pitch and others go through stretches where they can’t lose no matter how bad they pitch; Strally is in the can’t win mode right now. While I liked Oakland on Tuesday, Detroit is the play here.
