The Los Angeles Angels fought back gamely on Tuesday, but on Wednesday they had nothing left in the tank as they fell to the Rays. Mike Trout and J.B. Shuck had two hits each and Josh Hamilton had a hit, as the Angels scored one run on five hits. Starting pitcher Garrett Richards allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out two over 3.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-6 on the season. For Thursday’s game, the Angels start Jason Vargas, who has won two of his last three decisions. For the season, Vargas has allowed 117 hits and 45 earned runs, while striking out 73 over 107.1 innings for a 7-5 record and a 3.77 ERA.

While Vargas isn’t the best option around, he is better than the alternative here, Odorizzi, and while the Rays are the better team, the Angels have been fairly sharp of late and on the road, I give them an edge here.
