The Chicago White Sox enter Beantown Friday to scrap with the American League East-leading Boston Red Sox.

Chicago downed the Houston Astros Wednesday 6-1 during their last game. The Sox scored four runs right after Houston tied the game during the top of the seventh. Jeff Keppinger’s sacrifice fly and Avisail Garcia’s home run delivered the damage for Chicago, who also struck on Paul Konerko’s RBI-single and Leury Garcia’s sac fly.

Meanwhile, Boston couldn’t sweep the Baltimore Orioles, falling 3-2 Thursday evening. The Sox struck first via Stephen Drew’s single during the second, but that was Boston’s only hit 10 in chances with Runners In Scoring Position. The Red Sox rolled in their final run during the sixth on Shane VIctorino’s HR an inning after Baltimore increased their lead to 3-1.

Part of the reason why Boston’s been as good as they are of late is winning six of the last seven times Ryan Dempster (6-9, 4.77 ERA), Friday’s ace, has been on the hill. Five times during that stretch Dempster conceded at least five runs, but just once did he take a loss. At Fenway Park, Dempster is 4-7 with the New York Yankees, killing Dempster for seven runs during 5.1 frames Aug. 18 9-6 his last start.

Dempster’s other six home defeats came to the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays, yielding 30 runs, 28 earned, during 40.1 innings. In Dempster’s Fenway victories, he’s allowed 10 runs during 25 frames. Last year, the White Sox topped Dempster 7-4 by knocking in four runs during six innings. Versus Dempster, Chicago is 34-of-97 with 15 RBIs, four each from Adam Dunn and Keppinger.

The White Sox return with Hector Santiago (4-7, 3.25 ERA). After falling 2-1 at the Detroit Tigers, Chicago has won four straight games when Santiago has been on the rubber. On Aug. 18, Santiago made up for the seven-frame two-run loss to Detroit by winning 5-2 at the Minnesota Twins, surrendering two runs, one earned, during six innings. At the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers, Santiago gave up two runs during 13.1 frames for two away wins.

At the Houston Astros, Minnesota and Oakland Athletics, however, on June 16, May 13 and June 1 Santiago tumbled due to conceding 10 runs, seven earned, during 12.2 innings. On May 22, the Red Sox beat Santiago, despite only striking for two runs during six frames. Boston is 3-of-25 with two David Ortiz RBIs all-time against Santiago. On paper, the White Sox have a decent chance at the upset.
