The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets face-off on Thursday at Citi Field as they close out their series.
The New York Mets just haven’t been able to score runs and it cost them again on Wednesday, as they fell to the Phillies. Eric Young, Andrew Brown, and Ike Davis all had hits as the Mets scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out five over 4.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-2 on the season. For Thursday’s game, the Mets start Carlos Torres, who has been primarily working out of the bullpen this season. For the year, Torres has allowed 48 hits and 16 earned runs, while striking out 34 over 48.2 innings for a 2-2 record and a 2.96 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies are playing their best baseball of the season and while it may be too little too late, they racked up another win on Tuesday. Carlos Ruiz had two hits, including a home run and Chase Utley and Michael Young added two hits each as the Phillies scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels allowed nine hits and two runs, while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 6-13 on the season. For Sunday’s game, the Phillies start Ethan Martin, who makes his sixth Major League appearance. For the season, Martin has allowed 25 hits and 15 earned runs, while striking out 23 over 21.1 innings for a 2-2 record and 6.33 ERA.
New York is 7-4 against a team with a losing record, 1-6 in their last seven games overall, and 1-6 in their last seven home games. Philadelphia is 6-2 in their last eight games, 9-21 in their last 30 road games, and 3-11 against the NL East. Philadelphia is 9-3 in their last 12 games in New York.
This looks like a lousy game and it 's a good thing they are starting early or it might go all night. The Phillies are simply the much hotter team right now.
