The Milwaukee Brewers face the Pittsburgh Pirates in a rubber match Thursday after Pittsburgh knocked Milwaukee out 7-1.
The Pirates outhit the Brewers 13-7 to make up for having twice as many errors on Wednesday. In fact, Milwaukee couldn't catch enough breaks, only scoring an unearned run off of Charlie Morton (6-3, 3.14 ERA). Sean Gennett scored during the top of the seventh courtesy of catcher Russell Martin's error.

Marlon Byrd, however, had a three-run home run during the home-half to more than offset the Brewers, striking to begin the inning. Pittsburgh popped in runs earlier via Andrew McCutchen, Gaby Sanchez, Jerome Harrison and Jordy Mercer RBI- hits. Mercer doubled during the bottom of the fifth.
Yovani Gallardo (9-9, 4.61 ERA) goes next for Milwaukee, trying for his first road decision since July 1 when he fell 10-5 at the Washington Nationals. Gallardo was ambushed for eight runs during three frames. In his three previous away decisions, Gallardo surrendered five runs during 19.2 innings, all victories.
Gallardo also lost at the Cincinnati Reds, Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, giving up 11 runs, 10 earned, during 15.1 frames. On April 23 at the San Diego Padres, Gallardo prevailed thanks to a six-inning three-run affair. Pittsburgh also split with Gallardo at Miller Park, rocking in six runs, five earned, during 11 frames. Versus Gallardo, the Pirates are 47-of-194 with 22 RBIs, five from Sanchez.
Pittsburgh responds with Gerrit Cole (6-6, 3.81 ERA), who is 4-4 at PNC Park. Cole was 4-0 in June, winning thrice at PNC due to surrendering eight runs during 18 innings. In three July PNC Park losses, Cole conceded eight runs during 17.1 frames. The Pirates are 2-1 in Cole's three PNC starts this month.
Cole split with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies by giving up five runs during 11.1 innings. June 28 at PNC, Cole tossed six three-run frames and beat the Brewers 10-3. Milwaukee is 8-of-21 with a Juan Francisco and Aramis Ramirez RBI against Cole. Go ahead and take Pittsburgh here, although the Batting Averages say otherwise.
