The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals conclude their week day series on Thursday.
The Marlins record is less than impressive, but it doesn't tell us there have been quite a few close defeats. Back-to-back one run losses at Washington have been very competitive, but when all is said and done it was nothing more than defeat number eight in eleven contests. The main issue has been a troubled offense, which was a factor in Wednesday's 4-3 loss. Rain shortened Henderson Alverez' start to 1.2 innings, in which he gave up a run with three of the next four relievers giving up a run as well. The bats produced ten hits and walked twice, with Jeff Mathis going deep and knocking in two while Giancarlo Stanton went solo. Tom Koehler faces the division rival Nationals looking to snap a four game winless streak on Thursday. Koehler received a no decision in a 3-2 loss to Colorado, where he gave up a lone run over seven frames.

The Nationals are playing the type of baseball we saw a year ago that helped them to the National League East Crown. Following Wednesday's rain-interupted victory over visiting Miami, the Nationals have won seven of eight, which only solidifies their grip on second, with the division belonging to Atlanta. Stephen Strasburg tossed two scoreless frames before the weather ended his night, with Craig Stammen and Ryan Mattheus allowing three runs. The offense produced plenty of runners on ten hits and five bases on balls that saw Jason Werth homer and Ian Desmond knock in the game winner in the 7th. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez shoots for win number eight when he toes the rubber on Thursday. Gonzalez is looking for a big rebound from an 11-10 win over Kansas City (ND) where he gave seven runs on ten hits in 3.1 innings.
I was leaning Washington, but even though they have been winning, there have been several close contests. My thinking is we see another one run game.
