The terrible Miami Marlins try to upset the marvelous Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Miami was competitive the first two days at the Washington Nationals. Unfortunately for the Marlins Thursday wasn't even close losing 9-0. Miami was outhit 12-4 and more importantly outworked by Washington where it mattered most the heart.

Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins Free Pick - 8/30/13

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The Marlins' sagging spirit can be explained by Gio Gonzalez (8-6, 3.56 ERA) who conceded three hits and three walks. Miami's Tom Koehler (3-9, 4.72 ERA) was much less imposing allowing six runs during five innings. Half the Marlins' hits came from Adeiny Hechavarria.

As clinical as the Nats' starting pitching was Atlanta was even more impressive trumping the Cleveland Indians 2-0, 3-2 and 3-1. Thursday's finale was awesome thanks to Kris Medlen (11-12, 3.58 ERA) going seven six-hit frames.

The only thing you could say the Braves didn't do well on the mound was allow Cleveland to leadoff the eighth with a home run. Brian McCann's HR however came earlier and was of the three-run variety.

Julio Teheran (10-7, 3.08 ERA) is in charge of trying to stifle Friday's foe Miami who Teheran faced in back-to-back July starts. Teheran conceded three runs during five innings in a 4-3 Marlins win while five days later in Miami was terrific seeing in a run during 7.1 frames. Teheran beat the Marlins 6-4. Miami is 13-of-49 with seven RBIs, three Rob Brantly's, versus Teheran all-time.

Atlanta is 9-4 at Turner Field when Teheran throws; however, the Braves are 3-3 in his last six trips. Teheran has bled for 13 runs during 34.1 innings his last six outings in Atlanta. The Marlins won one of two Teheran Turner no-decisions. The other was a 2-0 Braves victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Miami retaliates with Jose Fernandez (10-5, 2.30 ERA) who has won his last five decisions. Considering it has been with the Marlins as well as Miami prevailing 12 of the last 15 times Fernandez has gone to the hill the National League Cy Young Award would be fitting. Too bad those awards, along with Most Valuable Player, more understandable, go to the best player on good teams, not the worst team.

Fernandez on the road is 3-5 giving up 21 runs, 17 earned, during 25.2 frames. That's not very good, but in Fernandez's three away victories the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies wiggled in five runs during 20 innings. That's better as well as allowing four runs during 23 frames in four road no-decisions. The Marlins are 2-2 in Fernandez's no-decisions falling twice by a run. Stunningly none of Fernandez's 25 previous starts this year and his career have come against Atlanta. If Fernandez can stymie the Braves perhaps he truly does deserve the NL Cy Young.
