The Tampa Bay Rays make the long trek out West to face the Oakland Athletics on Friday.
Tampa Bay has dropped to second in the American League East behind Boston and right now the Rays are probably trying to limit the damage. The past week has not been good to them with losses in four of five after falling to the Angels 2-0 on Thursday. The bats have been cold in the defeats and that ruined a solid outing from Jake Odorizzi who allowed one run on four hits and a pair of free passes in five frames. That was still a losing effort with the Rays unable to touch Jason Vargas who tossed a two hitter over seven. TB totaled three hits and walked five times but were missing the clutch hit. Left hander David Price draws Friday's series opening assignment against the Athletics. Price is riding consecutive wins and was especially effective in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees with both runs given up on five hits in six frames.

Just when Oakland appeared to be heating up they suffered one of their worse defeats of 2013 when Detroit scored four in the 9th for a walkoff 7-6 victory. The Athletics held what appeared to be an insurmountable 6-1 lead in the 5th against 19 game winner Max Scherzer before things eventually went south. Lost in the shuffle was a tremendous performance by Bartolo Colon who gave up a single run on seven hits through five innings. Grant Belfour absorbed the loss with all four runs plated in 2/3 of an inning that was culminated by Torii Hunter's three run walkoff homer. A 12 hit, one walk attack suddenly wasn't enough despite two run jacks by Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss. Jarrod Parker toes the rubber Friday aginst visiting Tampa Bay looking to continue his hot work on the mound. Parker is 4-0 with a no decision the last five times out where he has allowed eight runs in 37.1 innings.
A ton of momentum was left in Detroit after Oakland's late melt down but the Athletics might have the guy on the mound to rally the troops. Parker has been very good and will need to be once again against Price who is one of the best. I'm leaning the A's as a home dog...
