New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles Free Pick - 9/1/13

The Baltimore Orioles look to leave the New York Yankees with a loss on Sunday.
If you have watched the Orioles in the early to mid stages of 2013, you would have seen an offense capable of putting up plenty of runs in a hurry. Fast forward to the to the present; the offense isn’t as prominent and has a big game every so often, while the work on the mound has been okay. The bats never showed up Saturday in a 2-0 loss to the Yankees for their seventh defeat in eleven contests, which has the Birds on the outside looking in at the postseason. Scott Feldman suffered the consequences with a loss, despite giving up a single run on six hits and a walk over seven frames. The offense mustered just three hits and walked once and didn’t challenge. Baltimore sends out lefty Wei-Yin Chen to the mound to face the rival Yankees on Sunday. Chen was bombed in a 13-2 defeat to Boston, in which he was tagged for eight runs on eight hits and three BB over 3.2 frames.
While the Orioles have been fading, the Yankees have been on the upswing, with victories in seven of eleven that not only kept the Bronx Bombers postseason hopes alive, but moved them past the rival O’s into third in the American League East. In this stretch, the pitching and hitting have contributed, with the work on the mound carrying the load on Saturday. Ivan Nova tossed his first ever complete game shutout on three hits and a single base on balls. The Yankees attack did just enough on their seven hit, one walk attack that saw Robinson Cano produce all the offense on an RBI double and a solo home run. Veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte shoots for his 4th straight victory when he toes the rubber versus Baltimore. Pettitte has allowed just a single run in this span on 15 hits and six walks over 19.2 innings.
I look at these teams and think the Yankees should be fading and it’s actually the other way around. My gut says the Orioles can’t continue to fade, but I’m not convinced and would look at New York here.
