The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles face-off for game two of their series at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The New York Yankees are trying to hold onto their post-season hopes and they helped their cause on Friday beating the Orioles. Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki each hit home runs and Mark Reynolds had three hits as the Yankees scored eight runs on 13 hits. C.C. Sabathia allowed seven hits and five runs, while striking out four over 5.1 innings to get the win and raise his record to 12-11, while Mariano Rivera earned his 39th save. For Saturday’s game, the Yankees start Ivan Nova, who has won his last three decisions. For the season, Nova has allowed 101 hits and 35 earned runs, while striking out 92 over 100.1 innings for a 7-4 record and a 3.14 ERA.
The Baltimore Orioles have had their chances to improve their playoff position, but they haven’t been able to take advantage of most of them. On Friday, Nick Markakis had three hits, Danny Valencia had two hits, including a home run, and Manny Machado had two hits as the Orioles scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez allowed six hits and seven runs, lasting just four innings to take the loss and fall to 8-7 on the year. For Saturday’s game, the Orioles start Scott Feldman, who has won his last two starts. For the season, Feldman has allowed 79 hits and 35 earned runs, while striking out 67 over 91 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.46 ERA.
New York is 5-0 in their last five home games, 6-1 in their last seven games as a home favorite, and 5-1 in Nova’s last six home starts. Baltimore is 2-7 in their last nine games against the AL East, 1-6 in their last seven road games, and 1-7 in their last eight games as an underdog. Baltimore is 6-3 in the last nine meetings of these two.
Nova has been solid of late and while Feldman has as well, the Orioles just haven’t stepped it up in the big games.
