Chicago Cubs vs. Miami Marlins Free Pick - 9/2/13
2013-09-02 01:20:00 EDT
The Miami Marlins take a trip to the Windy City to tangle with the Chicago Cubs Monday afternoon.
The Marlins pitching is generally the strength of this team and a bad performance on the mound typically ends badly. That wasn’t a worry Sunday, with Miami pounding the division-leading Braves by a 7-0 count. Starter Nathan Eovaldi not only threw the ball well, he enjoyed some rare support as well. Eovaldi allowed seven hits and issued a pair of free passes over seven scoreless innings to get the win. The bats piled up 13 hits and walked four times, with Jeff Mathis going deep and driving in three, while Ed Lucas knocked in two more. A struggling Henderson Alverez toes the rubber versus the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Alverez has been in a slump as of late, with 14 runs and 21 hits combined with seven walks covering his 19.2 innings pitched.
The Cubs have been fading for a while and mired in a slump for the last few weeks. The wins have been few and far between, but the Cubbies have won back -to-back contests after knocking off the Phillies 7-1 on Sunday. Jake Arrieta was at the top of his game, with just a single run plated on three hits and a trio of bases on balls through 6.2 innings of work to pick up his second win. The bats took care of business on a nine hit, three walk attack that saw Welington Castillo lead the way with a two-run double in the 4th. Left-hander Travis Wood gets the ball against Miami, looking to duplicate one of his best perfomances of 2013. Wood comes off a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers where he gave up an unearned run in seven frames.
With Alverez struggling, the Cubs look like a viable option, but the chalk on a bad team is a risky bet on the best of days. I’ll back Chicago, but will probably sit this one out.
