The San Diego Padres nearly responded and forced a rubber match Saturday at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, close losses still count as defeats. SD went down 2-1 in LA to assure the Dodgers of another series win.
The Padres were outhit 13-10 and committed the only error, with Logan Forsythe the guilty party. Andrew Cashner (8-8, 3.45 ERA) matched Chris Capuano (4-7, 4.50 ERA), tossing seven one-run frames.

Ronny Cedeno put San Diego ahead during the top of the fourth via a home run. During the bottom of the seventh, though, Los Angeles evened the game on Adrian Gonzalez's single. An inning later, Mark Ellis put the Dodgers on top for good. The Padres couldn't score on their one hit with Runners In Scoring Position. Cashner, of all people, was able to get it.
Zack Greinke (13-3, 2.86 ERA) will try to continue his sizzling summer when he gets the start Sunday. Since June 6, Greinke is 11-2, winning all five of his August appearances. Greinke gave up five runs during 36.2 frames after 12 runs in 41 innings in July. Greinke was 3-1 in July, the same record he held in June.
In LA, Greinke is 7-1, falling only to the Cincinnati Reds July 25, allowing four runs during seven innings. At SD April 11 and June 16, the Padres lost 3-2 to the Dodgers and 6-1 to Greinke, with the Los Angeles ace hurling five and eight frames of two and one-run ball. Verus Greinke, San Diego is 23-of-98 with eight RBIs, four from Carlos Quentin.
The Padres respond with Tyson Ross (3-7, 3.05 ERA), who was just 1-3 in August. Ross did prevail 3-1 Aug. 10 at Cincinnati, though, with a seven-inning one-run gem. On Aug. 26 at the Arizona Diamondbacks, Ross was mauled for six runs, four earned, during six frames to fall 6-1. Ross won at Arizona and the Milwaukee Brewers to end July by yielding a run during 14 innings. In Ross' first four four road decisions, all losses, he conceded 11 runs, 10 earned, during 7.1 frames.
SD is 1-1 against the Dodgers when Ross takes the hill. At LA June 4, Ross fell 9-7 giving up three runs during 2.1 innings. The Dodgers are 12-of-38 with four RBIs, half from Yasiel Puig, versus Ross. Los Angeles should romp.
