Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets Free Pick - 9/3/13

The New York Mets continue their NL East battle with the front- running Atlanta Braves.

Even though the Mets have been out of the poseason conversation for quite  a while, they still have a few goals to play for. Reaching the .500 mark is one and securing third in the National League East is another. Both goals were put on hold for another day after a 13-5 defeat at the hands of the division-leading Braves. The work on the mound cost them, with Daisuke Matsuzaka struggling through three innings, where he was charged with six runs on seven hits before the bullpen provided no relief. The offense simply couldn’t keep up, with nine hits and a trio of BB, seeing five different players knocking runs and five scoring. The Mets send Carlos Torres to the mound Tuesday to face the Braves for the second time. Torres came out of the pen to knock off Philadelphia 11-3, with just one run allowed on four hits in 6.2 innings.

A day after getting hammered Sunday where not one thing went right, Atlanta opened up the flood gates at the plate in a 13-5 rout of the visiting Mets. In the process, Atlanta has won seven of eight and moved a step closer to locking up the National League East. The pitching wasn’t great, but this was the day to be off their game, with the runs flowing. Starter Paul Maholm got the win, with three runs plated on six hits and a trio of base on balls over five innings of work. That was easily a winning performance, with the bats totaling 17 hits and walking six times, with Freddie Freeman going deep and driving in five, while Andrelton Simmons knocked in four more. Atlanta is scheduled to send out Kris Medlen to face New York on Tuesday. Medlen is hoping to duplicate his last performance in a 3-1 victory over visiting Cleveland, where he gave up six hits over seven scoreless frames.

Torres was great last time out, but he has been primarily used in relief, while Medlen is looking to stay hot in preparation for the postseason. Don’t care for the chalk, but will go with the hot team at home…
