Chicago Cubs vs. Miami Marlins Free Pick 9/3/13

The Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins meet on Tuesday for game two of their series at Wrigley Field.
The Chicago Cubs jumped out to an early lead on Monday against the Marlins, but were unable to hold on for long and then never even mounted a rally. Dioner Navarro and Ryan Sweeney had two hits each and Anthony Rizzo had a hit, but the Cubs scored three runs in the first inning and never scored again, taking the loss. Pitcher Travis Wood allowed nine hits had four runs over seven innings to get hung with the loss. For Tuesday’s game, the Cubs start Edwin Jackson, who is having one of his worst seasons as a pro. Jackson couldn’t get a win early then had a nice stretch, but of late he is 0-2 in his last three starts with a 3.86 ERA and 7-14 with a 4.90 ERA for the year.
The Miami Marlins have the second worst record in baseball, but it is easy to see they are putting together the young talent that will be the base of their team in the future. On Monday Christian Yellich had three hits and a home run and Justin Ruggiano had two hits. Pitcher Henderson Alvarez helped his own cause with two hits, including a home run and he also allowed seven hits and three runs over seven innings to get the win. For Tuesday’s gam,e the Marlins start Tom Koehler, who has never got it going this year. For the season, Koehler is 3-9 with a 4.72 ERA and he is 0-1 with a 5.29 ERA in his last three starts.
Chicago is 6-21 in their last 27 games, 2-7 in their last nine games as a favorite, and 0-5 in Jackson’s last five starts. Miami is 8-19 in their last 27 games as an underdog, 1-4 in their last five game twos of a series, and 1-4 in Koehler’s last five starts. Miami is 2-5 in the last seven meetings of these two.
I know Jackson has the ability to be better than he has been, but he, like the Cubs, has been in a tailspin, making the Marlins the better play here.
