The Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh pirates face-off on Monday at Miller Park for game one of their series.
The Milwaukee Brewers are having a tough year, but it doesn’t mean they can’t play a part in the way the NL Central will play out. The Brewers find themselves in fourth place in the National League Central, 20 games behind the leaders so the postseason is out of the question, but with every game being important, their games against the leaders will be meaningful. Milwaukee has lost their last three games and are 28-36 at home on the season. Scooter Gennett is hitting .341 for the year, while jean Segura at .301 has been steady all year, a year where Milwaukee’s best player, Ryan Braun, was injured and then suspended. Tyler Thornburg takes to the hill for the Brew Crew in this one, where he has worked as both a starter and reliever. Thornburg last started on August 14th against Texas, getting a no decision in six innings of work. Thornburg’s longest work since that start has been 1.2 innings, with the rest all being less.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are tied for the lead in the NL Central and while they had a chance to emerge from the weekend as the leaders, they failed to beat the Cardinals on Sunday. The Pirates are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 34-32 on the road this season. The Pirates have added Justin Morneau, John Buck, and Marlon Byrd through trades just in the last week, showing they are serious about making a run in the postseason. For Monday’s game, Charlie Morton gets the start for the Pirates and he hasn’t gotten much ink but he has won his last three decisions and five of his last six, while putting together a 6-3 record on the season and a 3.14 ERA.
Milwaukee is 1-6 in their last seven home games, 1-5 in their last six home games against a right-handed starter, and 3-7 in their last 10 Monday games. Pittsburgh is 1-4 in their last five games against a team with a losing record, 4-1 in game one of a series, and 9-4 in Morton’s last 13 starts. Pittsburgh is 9-45 in their last 53 games in Milwaukee.
The Pirates need to shed that horrific record in Milwaukee and the question mark for Thornburg is how long can he go and still be effective, but I see Milwaukee being on top of that. We aren’t going to see a lot of scoring here and my free pick is on the under, while my pick on the winning side will go in the Premium Area.
