The Los Angeles Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Tuesday in Anaheim for game two of their series.
It may be a disappointing year for the Los Angeles Angels but they have been playing some solid baseball of late and the pounded the Rays on Monday. Erick Aybar and Grant Green homered and Mike Trout and J.B. Shuck added two hits each as the Angels scored 11 runs on 16 hits. Pitcher Garrett Richards won despite walking seven batters over 5.0 innings as he allowed just two hits and a run. For Tuesday’s rematch Los Angeles starts Jason Vargas who is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last three starts and 8-5 on the season with a 3.54 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays were contending for the lead in the American League East before their West Coast road trip began but it has been rough on them as they are now 5.5 games back and sinking. On Monday Ben Zobrist had two hits including a home run, Desmond Jennings had two hits, and Delmon Young added a hit but it was only good enough for two runs on six hits in all. Starter Chris Archer lasted just 3.2 innings allowing five his and five runs to take the loss as things got so bad outfielder Sam Fuld had to come in and pitch. For Tuesday’s game the Rays start Matt Moore who makes his return from the 15-day DL. Moore was 2-0 in his last three starts with a 3.38 ERA and he is 14-3 with a 3.41 ERA on the season.
Los Angeles is 5-0 in their last five games, 2-9 in their last 11 home games, and -2 in Vargas’ last eight home starts. Tampa Bay is 1-6 in their last seven games as a favorite, 42-18 against a team with a losing record, and 18-5 in Moore’s last 23 starts. Tampa Bay is 13-3 in their last 16 games in Los Angeles.
