The Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet on Tuesday in Milwaukee for game two of their series.
The Milwaukee Brewers played it tight with the Pirates for most of their game on Monday, but they were unable to get to the lead and ended up taking the loss. Norichika Aoki and Jean Segura had two hits each and Aramis Ramirez had a hit, but the Brewers scored just two runs on eight hits. Tyler Thornburg was Milwaukee’s starting pitcher and he allowed six hits and two runs but that was only good enough to take the loss. For Tuesday’s game, the Brewers start Yovani Gallardo, who has been exceptional of late, going 2-0 in his last three starts with a 0.93 ERA, which is much improved from his 10-9 record with a 4.39 ERA for the season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates got the win in Milwaukee on Monday and in the process they took over sole possession of first place in the NL Central. Neil Walker hit a three run home run, Jose Tabata had three hits, and Andrew McCutchen and Clint Barmes had two hits each, as the Pirates scored five runs on 11 hits. Charlie Morton was masterful in his start, as he allowed seven hits and two runs, striking out six over 7.0 innings to get the win and Mark Melancon got the save. On Tuesday, the Pirates start Gerit Cole who is 1-2 in his last three starts, with a 3.26 ERA and he is 6-7 with a 3.80 ERA for the season.
Milwaukee is 0-5 in their last five games, 1-6 in their last seven games as an underdog, and 4-0 in Gallardo’s last four starts. Pittsburgh is 5-1 in their last six games as a favorite, 5-11 in their last 16 games as a road favorite, and 3-7 in Cole’s last 10 starts. Pittsburgh is 11-45 in their last 56 games in Milwaukee.
The total is set at eight and for my first free pick I will go with the under, as I don’t see much offense against what have been live arms. I also have a free pick on the winning side and I will give out that Free Pick on Tuesday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
