The Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers face-off on Wednesday as they close out their series in Boston.
The Boston Red Sox bounced back from Monday’s loss to the Tigers to beat Detroit on Tuesday. Jonny Gomes had two hits and Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli had hits as the Red Sox scored two runs on six hits. Startig pitcher Jon Lester allowed eight hits and a run, while striking out nine over 7.0 innings to get the win and Koji Uehara earned his 17th save. The Detroit Tigers never got the bats going against Lester as they fell Tuesday in Boston. Austin Jackson and Omar Infante had two hits each and Torii Hunter and Price Fielder had hits as the Tigers scored one run on nine hits. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to be denied his 20th win. For Wednesday’s game, the Tigers start Rick Porcello, who is 11-7 on the season with a 4.44 ERA and 2-1 in his last three starts with a 5.29 ERA.
Boston is 8-2 in their last 10 games, 6-2 in their last eight home games, and 7-1 in Dempster’s last eight starts. Detroit is 5-0 in their last five road games against a right-handed starter, 5-3 against the AL East, and 2-5 in Pocello’s last seven starts as a road underdog. Detroit is 5-2 in the last seven meetings of these two.
The Tigers are the better team and getting the edge in the pitching match up as well makes this an easy pick.
