The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Thursday in Cincinnati as they close out their series.
The Cincinnati Reds fought the good fight on Wednesday but in the end they came up short losing to the Cardinals in 16 innings. Brandon Philips had two hits including a home run and Shin-Soo Choo, Todd Frazier, and Zack Cozart each had two hits as the Reds scored four runs on 10 hits. Bronson Arroyo allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned, over 7.0 innings but got a no decision as Logan Ondrusek took the loss. For Thursday’s game the Reds start Tony Cingrani who is 6-3 on the season with a 2.76 ERA and 1-2 in his last three starts with a 1.20 ERA.
The St. Louis Cardinals moved within one game of the lead in the National League Central as they beat the Reds on Wednesday. Matt Adams hit two home runs including the eventual game winner, Matt Carpenter had three hits, and Carlos Beltran had two hits as the Cardinals scored five runs on 12 hits. Shelby Miller allowed six hits and three runs over 5.2 innings but it was Carlos E. Martinez who eventually got the win. For Thursday’s game the Cardinals start Lance Lynn who is 13-9 on the season with a 4.29 ERA and he is 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA in his last three starts.
Cincinnati is 8-4 against a team with a winning record, 10-4 in their last 14 home games, and 5-1 in CIngrani’s last six starts against the NL Central. St. Louis is 2-4 in their last six road games, 2-5 in their last seven games overall, and 1-4 in Lynn’s last five starts.
