Oakland Athletics vs. Houston Astros Free Pick - 9/5/13
2013-09-05 09:05:00 EDT
The Houston Astros stay on the road to kick off a series with the Oakland Athletics Thursday.
It might sound like a broken record, but the wins for Houston have been few and far between as the team has struggled on both the mound and at the plate. There have been times when neither unit has been outstanding, but getting them on the same page hasn’t happened nearly enough. The bats over came poor pitching in a 6-5 victory over Minnesota Wednesday that saw Jordan Lyles give up three runs in six framesand receive a no decision, while Erik Bedard got the win, despite allowing two runs in 2.2 innings. The Stros pounded out 12 hits and walked twice with Brandon Barnes and Trevor Citeme driving in two runs each. Houston sends Brad Peacock to the bump in the series opener with Oakland on Thursday. Peacock has struggled in 2013 with a 3-5 record over 58.1 innings, where he has posted an ERA of 5.98.
After Tuesday’s loss to the visiting Rangers dropped Oakland to second in the American League West, the A’s rebounded nicely with an 11-4 pounding of their division rivals to tie for the West lead. The Athletics remained hot with wins in eight of ten behind solid hitting and pitching. That was a winning formula Wednesday with Jarrod Parker allowing a pair of runs over six innings to pick up the win. The bats totaled 12 hits and walked six times with Daric Barton, Coco Crisp, Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss all slugging home runs. Oakland leans on Sonny Gray to pitch the team past Houston and hold on to the division lead in the process. Gray has only five career starts under his belt, going 2-2 through 35 frames and logging a 2.57 ERA overall.
I don’t like the huge juice on a kid with a handful of starts and I don’t know if there is value on the run line so the options aren’t many here. I like the A’s, but probably not a play right now…
