The Chicago White Sox try to deal a blow to the postseason hopes of the Baltimore Orioles Thursday.
A week ago, the White Sox were playing winning baseball and looked as good as they have all season. However, things have taken a turn for the worse with rallies falling short and blown leads adding up to six consecutive defeats, where the work on the mound has been subpar. That trend continued with Erik Johnson not getting help from his defense, with five runs given up, but only three were earned over six frames. The bats mounted an eight hit, five walk attack that saw Avisail Garcia and Josh Phegley knock in a pair of runs each, as the White Sox nearly came back from a 6-1 hole. Left-hander Jose Quintana toes the rubber to face the Orioles for the second time in 2013. Quintana has been a steady performer in the Chicago rotation with a 7-5 record and 3.69 ERA.

Baltimore really needed a win Wednesday and appeared poised for a big momentum boost, as the O's rallied from a 4-0 first inning hole for the tie, but never scored again in a 6-4 loss at Cleveland. Instead of winning three of four, the O's have dropped back to back contests, placing their playoff aspirations placed on hold. Starter Zach Britton struggled right out of the gate, with four runs allowed in the first and lasted only 2.2 innings, and Kevin Gausman taking the loss with a pair of runs plated in 2.2 innings. The offense mustered just six hits and walked once with Manny Machado blasting a three run bomb, while Adam Jones went solo. Miguel Gonzalez draws the starting assignment against the White Sox for his first career matchup against them. Gonzales has struggled as of late with an 0-2 record with a hefty 5.94 ERA.
Quintana has been steadier on the hill, with Gonzalez looking just tired at times, which would worry me in backing the Birds. Probably no play for me, but if I did it would be on the plus money for a small interest...
