Miami Marlins vs. Washington Nationals Free Pick - 9/7/13
2013-09-07 06:10:00 EDT
The Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins take the field in a National League East tilt.
Washington’s lone goal at this point is to finish 2013 with a winning record, which wouldn’t be a bad accomplishment, considering how things have been. The offense and hitting have been off and on and it was more off in a 7-0 defeat in South Florida on Friday. Starter Dan Haren needed a big performance, with Fernandez thiteming for Miami and it wasn’t to be, with five runs plated over just three frames. That was game over ,with the bats mustering only a pair of hits and two BB. The Nationals give rookie right-hander Tanner Roark his first career start against the Marlins Saturday. Roark has nine relief appearances and has gone 4-0 with a 1.19 ERA over 22.2 innings pitched.
Miami has struggled the entire season so winning four of five could be considered a hot streak. The Fish have seldom gotten their pitching and hitting on the same page, but did just that Friday behind yet another strong performance on the mound from Jose Fernandez. Fernandez was at his very best with a one hit shut out over seven innings, while striking out nine. That was easily enough to win, with the Marlins pounding out 13 hits, with Logan Morrison and Giancarlo Stanton leaving the yard and combining to drive in five runs. The Marlins send Nathan Eovaldi to the hill on Saturday to face the visiting Nationals. Eovaldi has been fairly steady for most of the season, going 3-5 in 14 starts, while accumulating a 3.40 ERA.
Who knows what we’ll see from Roark, but if he thitems for Washington he probably has potential. I like the way Eovaldi has been thiteming and I’m inclined to take a shot at the plus odds, but this is a long shot.
