The Atlanta Braves look to move closer to the postseason with a win at the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Braves drive to the National League East championship was put on hold Friday in a 2-1 series opening loss to Philadelphia. Atlanta certainly received the pitching to win, but also proved that you have to score to win in this game. The Bravos have still won eight of eleven, but squandered a solid performance on the mound from Mike Minor who gave up a two run homer in the 7th to spoil an otherwise solid effort. The bats were dead silent, with only three hits that saw Andrelton Simmons connect on a solo homer. Rookie Alex Wood hopes for a big rebound when he squares off with the Phillies Saturday evening. Wood took one on the chin in a 7-1 loss to Miami, where he allowed all seven runs in 2.1 frames.

Philadelphia had been showing signs of slowing down the past week or so, with defeats in four of five. That made the sight of the division leading Braves coming to town an unpleasant one. It turned out to be more unpleasant for the Bravos, who couldn't get their bats going against Cliff Lee, who gave up just a solo homer through eight innings of work with Jonathan Papelbon recording the save. The Phillies mustered just four hits themselves, but the one that counted was a two run bomb off the bat of Cody Asche in the 7th, which proved to be enough. The Phillies hope that Kyle Kendrick can right the ship against the visiting Braves on Saturday. Kendrick has been struggling over his last ten appearances, in which he has gone 3-6 with a no decision.
The Phillies are playing for pride right now with their youngsters wanting to impress. I favor Atlanta but won't pay the juice.
