The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet on Saturday as they continue their battle atop the NL Central.
The St. Louis Cardinals jumped on the Pirates on Friday and got a win in this all-important series. Yadier Molina hit a home run and Jon Jay and Carlos Beltran had three hits each as the Cardinals scored 12 runs on 16 hits. Starting pitcher Joe Kelly allowed eight hits and a run over 6.0 innings to get the win and Edward Mujica earned his 36th save. For Saturday’s game the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who is 15-9 with a 3.14 ERA for the season and 1-2 with a 8.47 ERA in his last three starts.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still leading the NL Central but their lead is down to a half of a game as they lost on Friday. Josh Harrison hit a home run and Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata had two hits each as the Pirates scored eight runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett allowed six hits and five runs lasting just 3.0 innings and taking the loss. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Jeff Locke who is 9-4 on the season with a 3.22 ERA and 0-1 in his last three starts with a 12.71 ERA.
St. Louis is 10-3 in their last 13 games as a favorite, 3-6 in their last nine games, and 26-12 in Wainwright’s last 38 starts as a favorite. Pittsburgh is 12-4 in their last 16 games as a road underdog, 35-16 in game two of a series, and 4-1 in their last five road games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. Pittsburgh is 9-5 in the last 14 meetings of these two.
Neither of these pitchers have gotten it done of late but I give the edge to the Cards with their bug game experience as well as Wainwright’s.
