The Oakland Athletics shoot for a series-ending win over the visiting Houston Astros.
The Astros record says every thing we need to know about how things have gone in 2013. What it doesn't say is Houston has given Oakland as tough a time as any team in the game. The Stros dropped a 2-1 decision to the division leading Athletics, which was the seventh time these teams have played games decided by a single run. Houston can thank starter Brett Oberholtzer for staying competitive, with just a single run given up over six frames. The bats let him down with just five hits producing a run on a fielder's choice grounder. Rookie Paul Clemens gets the starting nod for the third straight time when he faces the Athletics. Clemens struggled in his second start, with four runs plated on seven hits in 3.2 frames of a 10-6 loss to Minnesota.

Oakland controls their own fate as far as capturing the American League West is concerned. The Athletics win and nobody can do anything and that is exactly what the division leaders are doing right now, with wins in eight of eleven after upending Houston on Saturday. Daniel Strailey was at the top of his game, with a two-hit shutout over seven innnings pitched, with Sean Doolittle picking up the save. The Athletics did have base runners on ten hits, but rode solo jacks from Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie. The Athletics are hoping to give Bartolo Colon some run support as he tries to break a five game winless skid. Colon has allowed a single run the past two times out, covering five innings apiece.
I hate the big odds on these type of games, especially with an uknown hurler going for Houston, which can be good or bad. I'll back Colon and Oakland but there is really no value to me.
