Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Diego Padres Free Pick - 9/10/13

The San Diego Padres visit Citizen’s Bank Park to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
San Diego has been more competitive then in recent years but they are still quite a few pieces away from being a factor in the National League West. The Padres need a few more bats and arms overall but the team is still alive for third in the division which wouldn’t be a bad finish. SD swept awy the Rockies after a 5-2 victory Sunday behind Ian Kennedy who gave up both runs in five innings with four relievers tossing shut out ball. The offense was quiet until the 7th when Nick Hundley smacked a three run double that was preceeded by a bases loaded walk. San Diego hopes to stay hot when Andrew Cashner takes the ball Tuesday against Philadelphia. Cashner has generally been competitive but has turned it up a notch lately with a 0.86 ERA in his last three.
If momentum exists then one would have to assume the Phillies have it after a home sweep of the National League East leading Braves. At the very least that should be a confidence builder for a team that is already looking to 2014. The Phillies are getting a look at some of their younger players with a few playing a role in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over visiting Atlanta. Cole Hamels picked up the win with a pair of runs allowed over eight frames with BJ Rosenberg recording his first career save. Darin Ruf drove in two runs with his 8th inning bomb proving to be the difference. Rookie Tyler Cloyd makes his second straight Tuesday when he takes the bump versus San Diego. Cloyd struggled in a 5-3 loss to Colorado where he allowed five runs including two homers in six frames.
Cloyd was sent to the minors and is back after a handful of starts with some success, while Cashner easily has the edge in experience. Looks like a toss up and risky game to me, with better choices out there…
