The Texas Rangers and the Pittsburgh Pirates face-off on Tuesday for game two of their interleague series.
The Texas Rangers couldn’t get a run across the plate on Monday as they fell to the Pirates. Alex Rios, Adrian Beltre, A.J. Pirzynski, and Geovany Soto all had hits, as the Rangers didn’t score on four hits. Starting pitcher Yu Darvish allowed four hits and a run, while striking out six over 7.0 innings to take his eighth loss of the season. For Tuesday’s game, the Rangers start Martin Perez, who is 9-3 on the season with a 3.41 ERA and 3-0 with a 3.15 ERA in his last three starts.

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t have much offense on Monday, but it was enough to get the win. Andrew McCutchen had two hits, Marlon Byrd had a hit and scored a run, and Pedro Alvarez had a hit and an RBI as the Pirates scored one run on six hits. Starting pitcher Gerit Cole allowed three hits and struck out nine over 7.0 innings to get his seventh win, while Mark Melancon earned his 12th save. For Tuesday’s game, the Pirates start Francisco Liriano, who is 15-7, with a 2.98 ERA and 1-2 record in his last three starts with a 6.60 ERA.
Texas is 8-3 in their last 11 interleague games, 19-10 in their last 29 games as a favorite, and 7-0 in Perez’s last seven starts. Pittsburgh is 10-2 in their last 12 interleague games, 1-4 in their last five games overall, and 10-4 in Liriano’s last 14 starts. Pittsburgh is 1-4 in the last five meetings of these two.
Perez has been outstanding of late, while Liriano has come up big for Pittsburgh all year and I look for him to come up big again here.
