The Philadelphia Phillies look to even their series with the visiting San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
San Diego has been playing well and the reward is third in the National League Central. The Padres stayed hot and assured themselves they would not lose ground in the standings after they picked up an 8-2 victory at Philadelphia on Tuesday. That was win number six in seven contests behind solid hitting and pitching. Andrew Cashner made short work of the Phillies lineup with a pair of runs given up in 7.2 innings. The offense received two RBI's each from Chase Headley, Ronny Cedeno and Rene Rivera. Left-hander Eric Stults draws Wednesday's start against Philadelphia at Citizen's Bank Park. Stults looks to get back on the winning track after recent struggles have seen him go 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA.

As I said Monday, if momentum exists, then the Phillies had to have it following a weekend sweep of the National League East-leading Braves. The day off might have hurt also, but not as much as facing a surging San Diego, who had every thing going, while nothing went well for the home team. It all started on the mound where starter Tyler Cloyd was charged with seven runs on nine hits through four frames. The bats never were able to rally on just seven hits where Cody Asche went solo and a run scored on a bases loaded walk. The Phillies send veteran Cliff Lee to the bump to face the surging Padres in game number two of their series. Lee has been in a groove over his last three and has gone 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA.
The Padres are tough to go against the way they are playing, but Cliff Lee is throwing well at a decent price so he gets my vote...
