The Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox face=off on Wednesday in Tampa Bay for game two of their series.
The Tampa Bay Rays are fading fast in the A.L. East race and with their loss on Tuesday they are now barely holding on to the second Wildcard spot in the American League. On Tuesday, David DeJesus, James Loney, Desmond Jennings, and Yunel Escobar all had hits, but the Rays failed to score a run on four hits. Starting pitcher David Price allowed three hits and two runs, while striking out nine over 8.0 innings to take his eighth loss of the year. For Wednesday’s game, the Rays start Alex Cobb, who is 8-3 with a 2.99 ERA, but he is 0-1 with a 3.66 ERA in his last three starts.

The Boston Red Sox have all but put away the A.L. East, as they pulled another full game away from their closest chaser, the Rays, with a win over them on Tuesday. Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes each had hits and scored runs and Dustin Pedroia had a hit as the Red Sox scored two runs on four hits. Clay Buchholz allowed three hits and stuck out six over 5.0 innings for his 10th win of the year and Koji Uehara earned his 19th save. For Wednesday’s game, the Red Sox start Ryan Dempster, who is 8-9 with a 4.79 ERA for the season and 2-1 with a 7.13 ERA in his last three starts.
Tampa Bay is 17-7 against the AL East, 16-6 in their last 22 home games against a right-handed starter, and 11-4 in Cobb’s last 15 starts as a home favorite. Boston is 6-1 in their last seven road games, 6-2 against the A.L. East, and 8-1 in Dempster’s last nine starts. Boston is 5-1 in their last six games at Tampa Bay.
While the bats were quiet on Tuesday, I expect them to be very much alive in this one and my first free pick is on the over. My second free pick is on the winning side and I will give out that free pick on Wednesday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
