The Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals face off on Saturday in Detroit for game two of their series.
The Detroit Tigers are counting down their magic number as they appear destined to win the A.L. Central. On Friday, Prince Fielder hit a home run, Austin Jackson had two hits, and Miguel Cabrera had a hit, as the Tigers scored six runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed nine hits and three runs, while striking out seven over 6.2 innings to get the win and Joaquin Benoit earned the save. For Saturday’s game, the Tigers start Doug Fister, who is 12-8 with a 3.77 ERA for the season and 1-2 with a 5.89 ERA in his last three starts.

The Kansas City Royals look to be close to becoming a contender, but that is for next season and beyond. On Friday, Salvador Perez had two hits, Billy Butler had two hits, and Eric Hosmer had a hit as the Royals scored three runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Bruce Chen allowed seven hits and six runs, while taking the loss. For Saturday’s game, the Royals start Ervin Santana who is 8-9 with a 3.35 ERA for the season and 0-2 with a 4.67 ERA in his last three starts.
Detroit is 31-14 in their last 45 games as a favorite, 19-7 against a right-handed starter, and 8-3 in Fister’s last 11 starts. Kansas City is 4-2 in their last six games, 4-10 on the road against a team with a winning record, and 1-5 in Santana’s last six starts. Kansas City is 3-12 in their last 15 games in Detroit.
The Tigers have gotten it done in the A.L. Central and I look for them to get it done once again here.
