The Pittsburgh Pirates are deep in the hunt in the N.L. Central and they lost out on a chance to help their case as the lost to the Cubs on Friday. Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin, and Garrett Jones each hit home runs as the Pirates scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Charlie Morton allowed four hits and three runs, while striking out five over 5.0 innings to get a no decision as Jason Grilli took the loss. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Gerit Cole who is 7-7 with a 3.48 ERA for the season and 1-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his last three starts.

The Chicago Cubs have a chance to play spoiler and they played that part well winning on Friday in Pittsburgh. Anthony Rizzo and Brian Bogusevic each hit home runs and Dioner Navarro had two hits as the Cubs scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out six over 5.0 innings, but is was Carlos Villanueva who got the win. For Saturday’s game, the Cubs start Scott Baker, who has allowed two hits in six innings of work.
Pittsburgh is 5-3 in their last eight games as a favorite, 4-1 in their last five games, and 2-5 in Cole’s last seven home starts. Chicago is 15-29 in their last 44 games, 7-23 against a right-handed starter, and 2-11 in game three of a series. Chicago is 1-4 in their last five games in Pittsburgh.
