The San Diego Padres shoot for back to back victories over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
San Diego won't be in the postseason so the next best thing is ruining the playoff plans of others. That plan has worked to perfection with the Padres taking two of three from Atlanta and opening the series with the Pirates with a 2-0 decision on Monday. The bats didn't do much but didn't much with Andrew Cashner tossing his best game of 2013 with a complete game one hit shut out. The Padres recorded eight hits with Jedd Gyorko rapping a run scoring single with a sac fly accounting for the scoring. Eric Stults draws Tuesday's starting assignment at PNC Park. Stults has been either on or off over the past ten times out where he has gone 0-6 with four no decisions despite six quality starts.

Every game is critical for Pittsburgh at this point in the season with a loss possibly making the difference between first and second in the National League Central. Despite Monday's defeat the Buccos have still won six of eight behind some solid performances on the mound. Pittsburgh received another great effort on the mound Monday but the bats didn't hold up their end of the bargain. AJ Burnett gave up both runs through 6.2 innings which was a losing effort with the Pirates mustering just a single hit by Jose Tabata and nothing else as Cashner had pinpoint control in the strike zone. Left hander Jeff Locke will be on the hill to face the Padres on Tuesday. Lockes red hot start has been going down hill for over a month with three quality starts over his last ten appearances.
In see absolutely no difference in the pitching with Locke struggling and San Diego not winning with Stults. I don't have a great feel for this one but I would rather take the pesky dog then lay sizable chalk even though this is a stretch...
