The Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers meet on Tuesday for game two of their series at Tropicana Field.
The Tampa Bay Rays are trying to lock down a Wildcard spot in the A.L. and they helped their cause getting the win on Monday. Will Myers hit a home run and Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist had three hits each as the Rays scored six runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Alex Cobb allowed six hits and two runs while striking out 10 over 8.0 innings. For Tuesday’s game the Rays start Jeremy Hellickson who is 11-8 with a 5.04 ERA but who was sent back to the Minors fairly recently while he was going through a five decision losing streak.

The Texas Rangers managed to tie the game on Monday against the Rays but after that they were never close again as they fell to the Rays. Ian Kinsler had two hits and Alex Rios and A.J. Pierzynski each had hits as the Rangers scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Matt Garza allowed eight hits and six runs and lasted just 4.1 innings to take the loss. For Tuesday’s game the Rangers start Nick Tepesch who is 4-6 with a 4.84 ERA for the season but he has primarily been working out of the bullpen of late.
These two would both be in the Wildcard game if the season ended today and the game would be in Tampa Bay but there are many chasers. The Indians are just a half of a game behind the Rangers, The Orioles are two games back, the Yankees are 2.5 games back and the Royals are three games back; in other words this series and every game is huge.
The Rangers just looked bad on Monday but I look for the bats to come out and for scoring to be plentiful in this one and my first free pick is on the over. My second Free Pick is on the winning side and I will give that Free Pick out on Tuesday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
