The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles face-off on Thursday as they close out their series at Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox are on their way to clinching the American League East, but they didn’t get any closer to doing that on Wednesday as they lost to the Orioles. David Ortiz and Mike Napoli each hit home runs and Shane Victorino had three hits, as the Red Sox scored three runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher Jake Peavy allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out eight over 7.0 innings, but Fanklin Morales took the loss in extra innings. For Thursday’s game, Boston starts John Lackey, who is 9-12 with a 3.56 ERA for the season and 1-1 with a 6.52 ERA in his last three starts.

The Baltimore Orioles haven’t given up and we saw that on Wednesday as they battled back and beat the Red Sox in Boston. Nick Markakis, Danny Valencia, Matt Weiters, and Brian Roberts each had two hits as the Orioles scored five runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen allowed 11 hits and three runs, while striking out five over 5.2 innings but it was T.J. McFarland who got the win and Jim Johnson who earned his 47th save. For Thursday’s game, the Orioles start Chris Tillman, who is 16-6 with a 3.70 ERA in his last three starts and 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA in his last three starts.
Boston is 10-4 in their last 14 games against a team with a winning record, 19-8 in their last 27 games overall, and 4-1 in Lackey’s last five home starts. Baltimore is 5-9 in their last 14 games as an underdog, 3-5 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, and 15-6 in Tillman’s last 21 starts. Boston is 5-1 in Lackey’s last six starts against Baltimore.
Runs aren’t going to come easy and for my free pick I am going to go with the under. My stronger play is on the winner and I will post that winning pick in the Premium Area.
