The New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants face off on Saturday in the Bronx for game two of their interleague series.
The New York Yankees kept their postseason hopes a live on Friday by knocking off the Giants in game one of their series. Alex Rodriguez and Alfonso Soriano each hit home runs and Ichiro Suzuki added a hit as the Yankees scored five runs on six hits. Starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia allowed seven hits and a run, while striking out four over 7.0 innings to get the win. For Saturday’s game, the Yankees start Ivan Nova, who is 8-5 with a 3.36 ERA for the season and 0-1 with a 7.07 ERA in his last three starts.
The San Francisco Giants played the Yankees tight most of the way on Friday, but they let up the lead late and never recovered, taking the loss. Juan Perez and Hector Sanchez had two hits each and Buster Posey had a hit as the Giants scored one run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Tim Lincecum allowed five hits and four runs, while striking out six over 6.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 10-14 on the season. For Saturday’s game, the Giants start Ryan Vogelsong, who is 3-5 with a 5.73 ERA for the season and 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in his last three starts.
New York is 1706 in their last 23 games as a favorite, 4-8 in their last 12 interleague games, and 7-2 in Nova’s last nine starts. San Francisco is 5-2 in their last seven games overall, 2-7 against the A.L. East, and 5-2 in Vogelsong’s last seven road starts against a team with a winning record.
I thought the Giants best chance of a win was on Friday, but I would say their chances are slim at best here. I’m taking the Yankees.
