After playing into the early morning on Friday, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles face off on Saturday in Tampa Bay.
It took 18 innings for them to get it done but the Tampa Bay Rays got the win and maintained their spot in the American League Wildcard race. David DeJesus had four hits, Ben Zobrist had three hits, and Jose Molina and Desmond Jennings had two hits each as the Rays scored five runs on 14 hits. David Price allowed nine hits and two runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings but he was long gone when Jeremy Hellickson picked up the win. For Saturday’s game the Rays start Alex Cobb who is 9-3 with a 3.02 ERA for the season and 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in his last three starts.
The Baltimore Orioles fought the good fight tying up their game with the Rays but they couldn’t get it done in extra innings and took the loss. Adam Jones, J.J. Hardy, Matt Weiters, and Nate McLouth each had two hits as the Orioles scored four runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Jason Hammel allowed six hits and three runs over 5.0 innings but he didn’t have a role in the decision as Bud Norris took the loss. For Saturday’s game the Orioles start Miguel Gonzalez who is 10-7 with a 3.92 ERA for the season and 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his last three starts.
Tampa Bay is 25-12 in their last 37 home games, 2-5 in their last seven games following a win, and 12-5 in Cobb’s last 17 home starts. Baltimore is 3-7 in their last 10 games against a right-handed starter, 5-16 in game two of a series, and 4-9 in Gonzalez’s last 13 road starts. Baltimore is 2-8 in the last 10 meetings of these two.
Both of these teams are going to need some innings from their starters but the odds for this one aren’t posted yet so check back shortly after they are and I will update this with my Free Pick.
