The Kansas City Royals take to their postseason hopes to Safeco Field to face the Seattle Mariners.
The Royals took two of three from Texas over the weekend, which has KC one game behind the Rangers in the battle for the Wild Card. Overall, Kansas City has won seven of eleven behind som very good pitching. The work on the mound was fantastic in a 4-0, ten inning victory over Texas on Sunday. James Shields tossed a six hit shutout over eight innings, but received a no decision for his efforts. The offense did nothing until the 10th until Justin Maxwell connected on a grand slam. Rookie Yordano Ventura makes his second career start against Seattle on Monday. Ventura was spectacular his first time on the mound, with a lone run given up over 5.2 innings against Cleveland.

If you were compiling a list of struggling teams in the final weeks of the regular season, Seattle would be on that list. The Mariners did manage to get in the win column Sunday on a 3-2 decision over the Angels, but the M's have still dropped eight of eleven. Both the arms and bats have struggled in this stretch, but the work on the mound saved them Sunday with Felix Hernandez allowing a run in four frames while striking out ten. The offense totaled eight hits and walked once with Justin Smoak cracking a two run bomb while a fielder's choice plated another. The Mariners send Brandon Mauer to the bump for his third start since coming out of the bull pen. In his two starts Mauer has allowed seven runs on 12 hits and a pair of BB covering eight innings pitched.
If the Royals are going to stay on the tail of Texas for the Wild Card then they have to win. The Royals are putting a lot of pressure on Ventura so hopefully the bats give him some help...
